
17 Jun Kyra Newton (She/Her)
Kyra Newton is a contemporary dance artist and studying herbalist in Calgary, Alberta with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts in contemporary dance and sociology from Simon Fraser University. Ms. Newton
has obtained certifications from DanceAbility, and AXIS teacher training and specializes in teaching
dance to people with and without disabilities. She is the creator of Blissful Dance, a new digital dance
company, that creates and offers accessible cultural dance tutorials and classes for different
demographics of people.
Newton is the co-creator of YYC Contemporary Technique Training, a training program for
professional dancers. As the previous Artistic Director of Momo Movement she has produced one
production and has been presented by High Performance Rodeo and Next Fest. Her other works have
been presented by Theatre Junction Grand, W&M Dance Project, the Ignite Festival of Emerging Artist’s
and Collide. Newton has performed with La Caravan Dance Theatre, Corps Bara, Con8 Collective, Sylvie
Moquin, Ruth Levin, Rufi Oswaldo and several Vancouver artists.
Kyra is passionate about co-creating dance work that examines the intersection of identities,
honors authenticity, and uses improvisation as a foundation for creation. As a dance artist, Kyra strives to
create equitable spaces for artists with different needs and abilities to come together to create. She
believes that dance has the potential to influence people on a large scale and change social structures in
a meaningful way.
